With people working at screens more than ever before, digital eye strain is an ever growing issue that can cause some serious long term effects. Sore eyes, blurred vision and headaches are common symptoms of eye strain, but there are ways to reduce eye strain at work.
Using The Right Lighting
The main cause of eye strain is exposure to bright artificial lighting, adjusting correctly can do wonders for eye strain. Your ambient lighting should be half as bright as the typical levels found in the everyday office, you will also find that improvement can be made when you don’t work under fluorescent overhead lighting. If you need to use external lighting, try floor lamps that aren’t directing light onto your computer screen.
Upgrade Your Display
Replacing old monitors is essential in reducing eye strain, and can work wonders on symptoms. Changing your monitor to something that is anti-reflective will help you to see a huge improvement in eye strain issues. Selecting a large screen can also help with avoiding eye strain too.
Simply adjusting the settings on your monitor can make the world of difference.
Brightness – Making sure that you have the brightness setting to just about match the brightness of your surroundings. Should your screen appear grey toned, this is a likely sign that it is too dark.
Tone – The tone of the screen is used to describe the spectrum of visible light emitted by a colour display. Blue light is a light associated with eye strain, and also known as a short-wave length visible light. Orange and red are better for the eyes due to their long-wavelength properties. When adjusting the colour temperature of your screen, always aim to make your screen a slightly more orange/red hue for better long term viewing comfort.
Text size – You need to adjust the text size and contrast for comfort especially when reading or typing documents.
Something we are not necessarily conscious off is the amount of blinking we do. Blinking often can make a big difference to eye strain issues, as it prevents your eyes drying out. When you are constantly staring at a screen, you will be blinking less frequently, which can consequently be damaging to your eyes. If you do experience dry eyes, you can ask your optician about artificial tear drops to use throughout your working day.
Glares can be reflected onto your screen in all surroundings, so reducing those should be a priority if you are suffering with eye strain. Getting an anti glare screen is a perfect way to improve your eye strain symptoms, and is much easier than painting the walls darker. If you wear glasses of any kind, getting anti reflective lenses are a great investment too, as they will cut out the glares hitting your eyes whilst you are working. Should you not need prescriptive glasses, you can still buy glasses that will help with eye strain issues including anti glare, anti reflective and colour correctional.
